Gardaí has renewed its call to find the murderer of the teenager Raonaid Murray, murdered 21 years ago.
The body of Ms Murray (17) was found in Silchester Crescent, Glenageary, less than 500 meters from her home, on Friday, September 3, 1999.
She was returning at approximately 11:20 pm from one night at the Scotts pub in Dun Laoghaire city center.
She was stabbed to death near her home with a one and a half inch knife.
Gardaí appealed to potential witnesses who have doubts about an alibi already provided in connection with the murder.
“If anyone has any information that can help identify the motive for Raonaid’s murder, we will appeal for their immediate help. It is possible that, without knowing it, he is protecting a murderer, ”Gardaí said in a statement.
Since 1999, Gardaí has interviewed 4,500 potential witnesses and issued appeals annually, but to date no one has been arrested for the murder.
The investigation has been hampered by the absence of an obvious motivation for his death.
An incident room at Dun Laoghaire Garda station remains open and the family is still hopeful for a breakthrough.
In a statement marking the 21st anniversary of his death, Gardaí said that many potential witnesses who are Raonaid’s age are now parents with children.
“We ask you to reflect now with the benefit of maturity and hindsight on any information that may be helpful for the investigation,” the statement added.
“The resolution of this murder is a top priority for An Garda Síochána and any information received will be treated with absolute confidentiality.”
Last year, on the 20th anniversary of his death, his father Jim Murray described the “horrible shadow” that has hung over the family since his murder.
“It has been 20 years since Raonaid was assassinated, but for us her terrible death lives on in our minds and we feel the pain of her loss every day. We believe that the memory of that time will continue to be alive for others as well. The Gardaí have assured us of their continued commitment to bring Raonaid’s killer to justice, but they need your help. “
