The National Public Health Emergency team will meet today to discuss the latest coronavirus trends in Ireland.
One area of great concern is the number of older people who have contracted the virus in recent weeks.
Ireland’s cases have been high for the past month, but the death rate remained low with fewer vulnerable people contracting the virus.
However, this Wednesday it was confirmed that 70 people over 75 years of age contracted the disease in the last fortnight.
Professor Philip Nolan, who tracks the virus, said: “In the last week we have started to see a lagged increase among the elderly and vulnerable groups. Everyone should be cautious in their interactions with these groups. “
This, he said, follows almost no cases in that age group in the summer months before August.
Another 89 new cases were confirmed in Ireland on Wednesday and Dr Ronan Glynn admitted that the disease was more prevalent than they would like.
The emergency team will meet today to discuss all of these latest trends, but no major decisions are expected to be announced.
Pub opening and further easing of restrictions will not be discussed again until closer to September 13.
