The National Public Health Emergency Team will meet today to review the latest Covid-19 trends.
The expert group said the epidemic is growing very slowly in many counties in Ireland.
While the most recent cases have involved young people, an increase in cases has been reported among the oldest and most vulnerable age groups.
Last night, when 89 new cases were reported along with one death, Acting Medical Director Dr. Ronan Glynn said the disease trajectory is higher than NPHET wants it to be.
As of yesterday, there had been no virus-related deaths for two weeks.
Overnight figures show the number of confirmed cases at the hospital holding steady at 39.
However, no major recommendations are expected from today’s NPHET meeting.
Speaking last night, NPHET’s Irish Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group Chairman Professor Philip Nolan warned that incidence among older people was increasing.
In the early stages of the pandemic, he said, the disease occurred in all age groups, but was “particularly severe” for older people.
Throughout August, the vast majority of cases have been in young people, but only in the last week “we have begun to see a delayed increase among the oldest and most vulnerable age groups.”
Currently, there are 42 confirmed cases in hospitals and six in intensive care units.
The average age of those in the ICU with the disease is 61 years and 90% have underlying conditions.
