Thiago Osorio Cortes, the cyclist who died after being hit by a car, was “very happy and always laughing,” his friends have said.
Mr. Cortés (28), from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, was cycling along North Wall Quay in Dublin when he was hit by a car around 10:30 pm on Monday night. Mr. Cortés was delivering food for Deliveroo at the time of the incident.
He was taken by ambulance to Mater Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Gardaí is looking for four occupants of the car, which left the place.
More than 100 people attended a vigil in Dublin to commemorate Cortés on Wednesday night.
Deliveroo delivery, motorcyclists and cyclists, many of them Brazilians, gathered at the Spire and on both sides of O’Connell Street to celebrate their friend.
Just before 6 p.m., representatives of unions and political parties marched down O’Connell Street in solidarity with Cortés’s friends, while buses and cars honked their horns.
Those attending the vigil held signs calling for justice for Mr. Cortés and saying that “the lives of immigrants matter.”
Many held flowers and candles and offered comfort to their fiancée, Theresa Dontas, as she hugged her crying friends. The crowd also participated in a community prayer.
Deliveroo drivers wrote a letter, which they will distribute to homes while they work, highlighting the dangers they face on the roads.
Always smiling
Gabriela Brito, a fellow Deliveroo driver, said Mr. Cortés “was always smiling” while at work. “He was very nice on the streets and made jokes,” she said. Brito said she hoped motorists would realize that her actions could pose a great danger to cyclists.
Ana Moreira, a close friend, said she was very sad because “now all her dreams are gone.”
“He deserved better. It’s so stupid that he just left for these people. I hope we find out who did this, ”he said. “He knew a lot of people in Ireland, he always cared about others, he always joked … He was always very happy.”
A Deliveroo spokesperson said his death was a “tragedy and a terrible loss.” “Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the rider’s family and friends. We will do everything we can to ensure that the rider’s family is supported during this very difficult time, ”the spokeswoman added.
It is understood that Deliveroo is in contact with Mr. Cortés’s family and that the company provides insurance that will provide them with some support.
Mr. Cortes has lived in Dublin for the past two years and was studying English. It is understood that he was saving money to study for an MBA at the time of his death.
The car that hit Mr. Cortés was recovered in Castleforbes Square a short time later by Gardaí. The car was a light gray Ford Fiesta, which has a large dent in the roof and windshield.
