Tributes flow as legendary Dublin fan Tony Broughan, aka Molly Malone, passes away

One of Dublin’s best known and most loved fans has sadly passed away.

Tony Broughan, known to many Croke Park and Parnell Park regulars as Molly Malone, passed away peacefully this morning.

Tony attended the Dublin games for 80 years across the country.

But it was his exploits dressed in his sky blue and navy blue Molly Malone suit and wig since 1975 that made him stand out.

The Hill 16 legend once told the Irish Times “I’m going to die on the hill”, such was his devotion to the Dubs.

“The fun is great at Hill 16,” he continued.

“They are always very good to me on the hill.

“Everyone sings Molly Malone when I walk in, there’s a big hum when I come down.”

Tributes from Dublin fans started pouring in this morning after the tragic news broke.

One woman said, “Hill 16 will never be the same again without our beloved Tony AKA Molly Malone, sleep tight Tony. Sending thoughts and prayers for your loved ones.”

Another commented: “QIP Tony Broughan. The hill will not be the same without you ringing the bell. Ar dheis dé raibh a anam.”

A third shared: “An integral part of game days on the hill. A lovely man too. He saw us win the elusive 5 in a row in his senior year watching the Dubs. Also a mark of the man who was proud to wear like this during the sterile years. “
