Singer Sinead O’Connor has said that she will begin training to become a “midwife of death” later this month.

His decision was not related to Covid, he told RTÉ Radio’s Ryan Tubridy program on Wednesday, adding that there were many personal reasons, including the death of a close friend five years ago that led to increased interest in care at the end of the event. lifetime.

“Not that I was rushing to the front, not at all. I am learning to use Word. It’s so early in the game, ”she said.

“First I have to find out if I can write an assignment and if I can do the practical work” and ultimately, she wanted to work in hospice, she said.

The singer will begin the one-year online diploma course on September 28. “I had a whole year of shows booked, but they were all withdrawn by Covid, and I wanted to do this course for a few years, but I could never find free time to tour, so I am making use of the fact that I am unemployed for the year.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to do since I was a child, to work in palliative care, but when I was a child it was only the priests or the nuns who did that, and God knows I didn’t want to be. any of those, ”O’Connor said.

But there are also personal reasons, one of which is the first song I wrote in my life when I was 14, it was exactly about this, so the desire was there ever since.

“A great impetus for me was that one of my best friends in the world died about five years ago, and one night he asked me if I would sleep in bed with him when he found out that he was dying, and I told him I would. But in the end I was too scared and I didn’t, and since then I felt like I would never leave a person alone in fear. I left my friend very badly. That is one of the most personal reasons, ”he said.

“I learned from that never to leave a person alone. So my wish is to work with people who are particularly lonely. I didn’t leave him alone for days, there were other people in the house, but I didn’t get into bed and snuggle with him like he wanted because I was scared.

“I was afraid of death and dying, that he would die. I’m sure all the training goes out the window when it comes to someone you’re so attached to. “

O’Connor said it would take more training than just a one-year diploma. “Obviously it will take a few years, God knows after a year they wouldn’t let you loose with dying people. You would need a lot of training. I imagine it will be three or four years before I am ready to do the work I want to do. Which is more or less to be a midwife of death.

“There is a movement of these people called matrons of death in which they work with people who are scared. The first step to becoming a midwife of death is obtaining a diploma. “
