Emergency services are warning people in parts of Galway this morning to be careful after “terrifying” floods hit parts of the county.
A yellow status warning is currently over Connacht and severe rains are expected in the northwest of the country.
Parts of Galway have already suffered severe flooding and some locals described the scenes as “terrifying”.
One woman who traveled to Clifden this morning, Jean Wallace, said: “I drove to Clifden for some supplies. They have since closed all the roads. A local elder said he had never seen anything like the floods today.”
Low Road in Clifden, parts of Connemara, and Maam Cross to Recess are currently flooded.
Gardai and fire service personnel are helping people in the area who have been trapped in the floods.
The rain warning is scheduled to last until 9 p.m. and much more rain is expected.
A forecaster from Met Eireann said: “This morning dull, with bouts of rain, with heavy falls in some places and risk of localized flooding. This afternoon it will get drier in much of Leinster and Munster. The rain will continue in Connacht and Ulster and will extend to the southeast tonight. Higher temperatures of 17-22 degrees with moderate southerly winds. “
