Met Eireann has extended its weather warning this morning to cover all of Connacht, as well as Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal.

Meteorological chiefs originally issued the advisory for just four counties, but updated it this morning when torrential rain hit.

The warning will be in effect until 9 pm tonight, as the weather front makes its way from the west and across the country.

The warning reads: “More heavy rain falls today with localized flooding and dangerous driving conditions.”

Heavy rain in Dublin

All areas of the country are expected to be affected by heavy rains with the possibility of flooding in many parts.

The forecaster added: “This morning is dull with bouts of rain, leading to heavy falls in places and a risk of localized flooding. It will get drier in much of Leinster and Munster this afternoon.

“The rain will continue in Connacht and Ulster and spread to the southeast tonight. Higher temperatures 17-22 degrees with moderate southerly winds.

“Early tonight, the rain will continue to affect Munster, Leinster and eastern Ulster. It will gradually clear to the southeast with clear spells and scattered showers from the northwest. Lower temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with moderate winds from the southwest.”
