Galway floods amid Northwest rain warning

A yellow state rain warning has been issued for Donegal, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

Met Éireann has said 25-35mm of rain is expected today in these counties, with possible localized flooding.

The warning is in effect until 5pm today.

Several roads in Connemara are impassable this morning, following heavy rains overnight.

Gardaí says that part of the road from Maam Cross to Recess is flooded. Similar problems are also reported on the route around Kylemore.

Low Road in Clifden is flooded and fire service personnel have been assisting residents at the Clifden Glen estate as water levels continue to rise.

Motorists are advised to avoid the routes in question if possible.

There are local deviations.

The national forecast is for episodes of rain, heavy in some places, with risk of localized flooding. This afternoon it will get drier in much of Leinster and Munster.

The rain will continue in Connacht and Ulster and will spread to the southeast tonight.

Early tonight, the rain will continue to affect Munster, Leinster, and eastern Ulster. It will gradually clear to the southeast with clear spells and scattered showers from the northwest.

Tomorrow is expected to be a bright day with spells of sunshine and scattered showers, the most frequent showers in the west and north.

Windy and rainy weather is expected over the weekend and in the first days of next week.
