Restaurant reservations in the North Dublin city of Skerries were canceled as a result of local fears of a surge in Covid-19 infections following a viral video on social media by a group of young people who speculate on who might get the virus next.
Concerns arose locally when the video began circulating on Monday. In it, several young women had separately recorded messages in which they named the names of people who they assumed could be infected after a supposed positive diagnosis among their peers.
The women are believed to have been to a social event in the recent past in Dublin City and a close contact from one of them has since been found to be positive for Covid.
The group was then tested as a result, with reports that some of them had since tested positive as well.
Two sports clubs in Skerries closed their doors as a precaution after the video appeared and said they would remain closed until a clearer picture emerges.
Businesses in the city criticized the video, and a popular restaurant said it had received two cancellations yesterday at noon.
“We have had two cancellations so far. They said they wanted to wait, after there were rumors of Covid in the city. I think the video has had a negative effect on business in the city,” said a worker. “It was stupid to make the video. I hope the girls aren’t infected, and if it turns out they are, I’m sorry for them.”
Meanwhile, the popular Blue Bar in the port of Skerries voluntarily closed its doors temporarily after a member of staff tested positive for Covid-19.
In a message on their Facebook page, the owners said they made the decision in the interest of public safety. He also carried a message that appeared to be directed at local rumors that have circulated since the viral video was shared in the city.
“We would also like to distance ourselves from the false reports in circulation, which contain a number of false and malicious claims about Blue Bar. None of the affected people have ever worked at Blue Bar,” he said.
Local representatives spoke to the HSE yesterday and told them that there was nothing unusual about the number of cases of the virus in the city.
“We spoke with the representative of Covid. The objective was to know the concrete facts, because there were many rumors around,” said the local councilor of the Green Party, Karen Power.
“People were concerned about the clusters, but based on the evidence available as of Tuesday morning, the public health department did not foresee the need for more restrictions in Skerries,” he said.
Ms. Power said they were informed that there was nothing extraordinary about the number of cases in the city.
