A former Irish club champion became the fifth defendant in connection with the robbery and attempted robbery of ATMs in Cavan and Monaghan.

Daniel O’Callaghan, 30, appeared in Special Criminal Court charged with five crimes related to the robbery of an ATM in Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, in April, and the attempted robbery of an ATM in Virginia, Co Cavan , in August.

Garda Detective Jim Matthews from Bailieborough Garda Station said he arrested O’Callaghan, of Monog Road, Crossmaglen, Co Armagh, on foot of a warrant in Cavan District Court at 11:55 on Tuesday.

Mr. O’Callaghan, who has three Irish Club Championship medals for Crossmaglen Rangers, is charged with offenses under Sections 72 and 73 of the Criminal Justice Act.

State Attorney Michael O’Donovan said O’Callaghan is charged with attempted robbery of the ATM at The Riverfront Hotel, Main Street, Virginia, Co Cavan, on August 14, 2019, for the benefit of, under the direction of, or in association with, a criminal organization.

O’Callaghan is also charged with the criminal mischief and robbery of an ATM on Main Street, Castleblayney, Co Monaghan, on April 3, 2019, and both offenses were allegedly for the benefit of, under the direction of or in association with a criminal organization.

He is also charged with participating in or contributing to the possession of cash with the intention of facilitating the commission by a criminal organization or any of its members of a felony in Tullypole, Moynalty, Co Meath, on August 14 and 20.

Defense attorney Seamus Lannon said O’Callaghan had already been on “pretty tight bail for separate but related matters” since January and had fully met all the conditions, to which Det Gda Matthews agreed.

A cash bond of 1,000 euros and a separate guarantee of 20,000 euros had already been set, Lannon said.

Det Gda Matthews told Mr. Lannon that he would have no objection to bail if all current conditions were followed. Det Gda Matthews said he would not object to O’Callaghan traveling to Newry, Co Armagh, to meet with his lawyer, provided he notifies gardaí, and checks in at Castleblayney Garda station after consultation.

O’Donovan said that, if granted, it would be “a brand new bail” and the separate 20,000 euro bond “reflects the seriousness of the charges.”

Presiding Judge Judge Tara Burns placed O’Callaghan in pre-trial detention until Monday, to allow the gardaí to conduct bail investigations.

Three Monaghan brothers and another man accused of participating in the ATM robbery attempt in border counties have already been released on bail from the Special Criminal Court.
