The young man, who had been living in the Portobello area of Dublin, was taken aback while cycling along North Wall Quay.

The vehicle, suspected of having been purchased by teens for cash and known locally as a “company car,” was found abandoned a few feet from the crash site in nearby Castleforbes Square.

A Garda forensic team spent Tuesday examining the car for clues.

Another driver raised the alarm before the victim was rushed to Mater Hospital.

‘IT’S TERRIBLE’

The young man’s family has been informed of his injuries.

His girlfriend last night kept a bedside vigil as he continues to fight for his life.

A source said: “The belief is that the car was bought from someone as an evasion and was not searched.

“Witnesses reported seeing four people get out of the car and the Gardai are eager to speak with these people.

“This is a very serious incident and it is in your best interest to report before the Gardai knock on your doors.

“It is terrible to think that a young man can be left for dead lying on the side of the road.”

SUPPORT FROM THE DIRECTOR

Gardai has launched an investigation into dangerous driving that has resulted in serious injuries.

But the driver could also be affected by leaving the scene of an accident without receiving assistance, which carries a maximum penalty of ten years.

Gardai held a conference on the case today as part of its ongoing investigation. Independent local councilor Niall Ring urged anyone with information about the accident to come forward.

The former mayor said: “Everyone in the community would like to offer their support to this young man’s family.

“I would also advise anyone with even the slightest information to contact the gardai immediately.”

Gardai has urged anyone with information to come forward.
