Outraged residents of an Irish suburb revealed that their community has endured 221 house parties within a 1km radius in 13 weeks during the close of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The revelation came when Cork residents, who brought a landmark lawsuit last summer against a landlord for failing to control their tenants, said they estimate that a staggering 6,000 people have attended the various parties in their community since May 23. .
Magazine Road and Surrounding Areas Residents Association (MRSARA) has now demanded that Taoiseach Micheál Martin address an issue that has affected the residents of his own constituency.
Since then, the landlord who faced legal proceedings has taken difficult steps to address unruly tenants ranging from installing CCTV security cameras to special noise monitors.
However, other landlords and tenants ignored the warning.
A recent party even featured a smoke machine.
Another party was attended by almost 80 young people in July.
The MRSARA study was conducted by local residents and revealed a total of 221 house parties organized since May 23 in 77 different houses within a 1 km radius.
MRSARA President Catherine Clancy said it was vital that the controls for the Covid-19 pandemic were fully enforced and that the Gardaí immediately received the powers they needed.
“We call on the Taoiseach to act as quickly as possible in the implementation of regulations, recommendations, but more especially legislation. This problem cannot be ignored by our legislators,” he said.
Ms Clancy, the former mayor of Cork, said that some elderly residents were afraid to leave their homes, such was the aftermath of the rowdy parties organized in the quiet area.
“This is one of the few businesses across the country that I think has no regulations. Across the country over the last few weeks we had 165 cases of restaurants and pubs not complying with Covid-19 regulations and immediate regulations were brought in to counteract that, so that it can be done.
