‘Tax problem’: tractor taken after a Garda stop

A tractor owner was left with a hefty bill in back taxes to pay to get a tractor back after members of An Garda Síochána seized the machine in recent days.

The tractor in question was stopped by the Gardaí in Co. Wexford on Monday (August 24) as part of a road surveillance checkpoint.

After checking the matter, Gardaí discovered that the machine was 10 years out of taxes.

On social media the next day, Wexford-based Gardaí said:

“Gardaí from the Wexford Divisional Roads Police Unit conducted a series of checks across the county last night.

In Kilmuckridge, a tractor that was tax-free for 10 years, a Ford Focus that was tax-free for 12 months and a Renault Megane were seized when the driver left a checkpoint.

“Gardaí discovered that the driver had no insurance, NCT, taxes and was driving without company.

“On Newtown Road, Wexford Gardaí also seized a Ford Mondeo that did not have NCT and was in poor condition,” added the Garda mail.

“Be responsible if you take a vehicle on public roads and make sure it is safe to drive,” Garda’s statement concluded.

According to VRT Ireland, the annual tax for a general transport tractor is € 333, while the tax for an agricultural tractor is less than a third of this, at € 102 per year.

Either way, taking into account a fine and impound fee, the owner would face a costly bill to get the tractor back.
