AT LEAST two sports clubs in Skerries closed their doors after a video circulating on social media showed young people guessing which friend was going to get infected next.
It is understood that several people from North County Dublin City who were in close contact in recent days have tested positive for the virus.
However, concerns were also raised by the video that circulated on social media in which a group of girls are seen talking about who could be infected with the virus. The tone of the video seems cheerful, even as young people talk about licking faces and catching Covid-19.
It was unclear if it’s a legitimate or bizarre hoax, but it immediately raised local concerns.
Martin Tully, secretary of the Skerries Town Football Club, told the Irish Independent that while no cases related to the club have been found, they have decided to close as a precaution.
“We had heard that there might have been some cases in the city and we decided it was best to be safe and we made a call.
“We will find out what the situation is in the city, hopefully on Tuesday and then we will review it,” he said.
Also, Skerries Harps GAA said, in a statement last night, a decision was made to shut down all activity until further notice.
“On Saturday afternoon, the club learned of a series of possible close contacts to a confirmed case of Covid-19 in the city,” he said.
The club canceled an adult camouflage training session scheduled for Sunday morning and then canceled all women’s soccer events after learning of more close contacts.
The members met virtually tonight and decided to shut down all club activity pending the results of the Covid-19 test in the city.
Local Green Party councilor Karen Power said an increase in the number of cases was reported in Skerries and urged people to take extra precautions in the coming days.
“I would also urge people to reach out to vulnerable people.
“It is also important to say that I would recommend caution in relation to inaccurate information on social media,” he said.
“There has been a lot of inaccurate information and a lot of rumors have spread,” he said.
Ms. Power commended local sports clubs for making precautionary decisions to close.
“It shows how with quick action, something like this can be nipped in the bud. They deserve to be commended, ”he said.
