Overseas travel to and from Ireland increased substantially in July compared to June as Covid-19 restrictions were eased, but visits to and from the country were still dramatically lower compared to the same period last year. .
New figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics show that there were 227,300 overseas arrivals in July and 275,400 overseas departures.
The CSO said this compares with 57,100 arrivals and 73,900 departures in the previous month, increases of 298.1% and 272.7% respectively.
But trips abroad in July remained dramatically lower than in July last year, when there were 2,225,900 arrivals and 2,183,900 departures, drops of 89.8% and 87.4% respectively.
Today’s figures show that of the 227,300 people who arrived in Ireland in July, 82.7% arrived by air and 17.3% arrived by sea.
Of the 275,400 people who departed from Ireland, 86.8% departed by air and 13.2% departed by sea, the CSO added.
The CSO said that from January to July, a total of 3,414,000 people came to Ireland from abroad and 3,448,700 people left the country.
This represents decreases of 70.5% in both categories compared to the same period in 2019.
