Kildare’s local blockade is “very likely” to be lifted on Monday or Tuesday, according to a local TD.

Independent TD Cathal Berry says he is very optimistic about an early exit from the running.

Restrictions in the county they were extended for two more weeks earlier this month, despite restrictions on Laois and Offaly being lifted.

However, Dr. Ronan Glynn said last week that health officials would explore easing measures as soon as possible.

A small number of new cases have been seen in Kildare in recent days, including only seven confirmed on Thursday and fewer yesterday.

Talking to Shane Beatty at Newstalk breakfastCongressman Berry, a retired senior physician who now represents Kildare South, said the recent figures are encouraging.

He said, “The next NPHET meeting is Monday or Tuesday of next week. If you look at the data … the numbers are very, very reassuring – actually really encouraging.

“I think now it is very likely that on Monday or Tuesday Kildare will come out of what is his third block.

“I think the decision will be based on the data and I think we will be in a good place on Monday or Tuesday.”

He said it is vital to see the ‘direction of travel’ when it comes to coronavirus numbers rather than just what happened in 24-48 hours, but the “direction of travel is very good right now.”

Congressman Berry emphasized that he had no “inside information” other than the gross figures that have been released.

However, he said: “The figures for the last 48 hours in particular have been excellent.

“You can predict how NPHET will decide early next week by looking at the numbers for today, Sunday and Monday night.”
