US President Donald Trump has toured areas damaged by Hurricane Laura in Lake Charles, Louisiana, receiving information on emergency operations and relief efforts.

“One thing I know about this state is that it rebuilds fast,” Trump said at a meeting that included Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards, Congressmen and federal agency officials.

The president did not meet with residents.

The massive storm hit Louisiana early Thursday with 150 mph winds, damaging buildings, knocking down trees and cutting power to more than 650,000 people in Louisiana and Texas.

However, Laura’s storm surge was much lower than anticipated.

The Category 4 hurricane killed at least 15 people, including some who died from carbon monoxide poisoning due to the unsafe operation of generators.

Governor Edwards called Laura the most powerful hurricane to hit Louisiana, surpassing even Katrina, which was a Category 3 storm when it struck in 2005.

Trump told officials, referring to those who died: “It’s a tremendous number, but I thought it could be, could have been, much worse.”

The president of the United States also met with National Guard personnel in Louisiana to assist with relief efforts and then flew to Orange, Texas, to meet with officials.

Yesterday, Trump used his speech accepting the Republican nomination for re-election with a warning that his Democratic opponent, Joe Biden, wants to destroy “American greatness.”

He declared himself as everything that stands between Americans and the disaster that he claimed his “weak” Democratic rival would bring if he won on November 3.
