Rory McIlroy’s wife, Erica, is pregnant with their first child, and is due to give birth to a girl any day.
The golf superstar and her American partner have kept the pregnancy a secret.
But the news was revealed during the television broadcast of the third round of the BMW Championship, where McIlroy is in contention today.
Golf Channel’s Steve Sands revealed that a girl should be born “at any time.”
McIlroy, 31, married American Erica at a lavish reception at Ashworth Castle in May 2017.
The man from Holywood met Erica Stoll when he was working for the PGA of America.
And Erica helped McIlroy when the four-time Major winner fell asleep and nearly missed his starting time at the 2012 Ryder Cup. They started dating in 2015.
The news may explain why McIlroy has been in trouble on the streets of late. He admitted last week that he was struggling to focus on the field and find his best form.
He said, “This is going to sound really bad, but I feel like in the last few weeks I’ve been making the moves.”
The couple have not made the pregnancy public and it remains to be seen if that will mean McIlroy will miss out on next week’s lucrative Tour Championship.
McIlroy currently has a great chance of winning the $ 15 million bonus if he wins the FedEx Cup in one week, a trophy he won in 2019.
He has said that his wife likes to be low profile and away from the spotlight
“Erica has been with me a lot in tournaments, but we’ve really tried to keep it low profile,” she told The Independent last year.
“She’s a very low-key person, not the kind to pass on things, but that side of my life is really good right now.
“What I love is that we were friends before something romantic happened.
“I found it refreshing to be with someone who was living a normal life instead of ‘Oh! My jet is 30 minutes late! ‘”
