Douglas will play Blackrock in the quarterfinals of the Cork Hurling Championship, a result that will end Midleton’s participation in the competition.
Both teams came into this match fully aware that it was a winner-take-all draw, but Midleton had a slight advantage in that if the proceedings were tied, they would advance from Group A due to their score difference higher than Douglas. .
And a draw was a clear possibility when Conor Lehane stepped on a free inside his own half in the second-half stops with Midleton narrowly behind.
However, Lehane’s free ones did not have the necessary legs, and the sliotar fell into the danger area before finally being cleared.
Midleton led twice by six during the first half, but Douglas’ seven in a row on either side of the interval halftime gave them the lead, 0-14 to 1-10, for the first time in procedures in 33 minutes.
It was a tremendously entertaining second half, tied seven times.
Douglas seemed to have made the crucial break when Kingston (0-2) and excellent Brian Turnbull scored three on the trot to push 0-18 to 1-12 up front.
Midleton’s response was to cut three of his own through Pa White (0-2) and Lehane.
We had a deadlock three more times before Brian Turnbull landed, proving the winning point in 57 minutes.
It was fitting that it was the young corner attacker who delivered the winning score given the excellent second-half display he did.
Midleton searched and searched for an equalizer thereafter, but found a relentless rearguard from Douglas led by Eoin Cadogan.
Douglas, as mentioned earlier, finished the first half stronger, hitting four in a row to cut a six-point deficit to two. 1-10 to 0-11 read the interval marker.
It was a very different story in the beginning, Midleton found the opponent’s net 70 seconds after the serve.
Cormac Walsh was the creator, with Luke O’Farrell sending the sliotar whistling past Douglas goalkeeper Donal Maher.
Conor Lehane, Cormac Walsh and James Nagle were Midleton’s first scorers when Ben O’Connor’s team went ahead four times late in the first quarter.
At the other end, Alan Cadogan was the main threat to Douglas, the Cork senior scoring four game points in the first half hour.
Middle Cillian O’Donovan was another who featured prominently on the roster, eliminating a couple from the game.
Three unanswered white flags from Tommy O’Connell, Lehane and Luke O’Farrell sent Midleton 1-9 to clear 0-6 in 24 minutes, the six-point difference reflecting Midleton’s superiority in many areas.
And six was the gap before Kingston’s four consecutive free practice sessions put Douglas within arm’s reach to turn around for the second period.
They found another gear in the second half to reserve a spot in the knockout stages at Middleton’s expense.
