Health chiefs announced 142 additional COVID-19 cases in Ireland tonight.

There have been no more deaths from the deadly bug.

The total number of cases since the start of the outbreak now stands at 28,720, while 1,777 people have lost their lives to the disease.

It has been six months since the first case of coronavirus was confirmed in Ireland.

Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Medical Director, said: “Today marks 6 months since our first case of COVID-19. It has been a very difficult time for many and few have been affected in any way by the negative effects of this pandemic.

“However, it has also been a moment of incredible solidarity, a moment in which the sense of community has come to the fore.

“We have seen innovation, cooperation, volunteerism and charity, and kindness on a huge scale. Our frontline workers have increased over and over again.

“But the foundation of it all has been that each person has done their part by making the right decisions, many times, every day.

“Together, we have broken the chains of transmission and flattened the curve. As cases increase again, it is these same behaviors that will once again make a difference, protecting ourselves, our families and our communities.”

Of the cases reported today;

  • 74 are men / 66 are women
  • 69% are under 45 years old
  • 32 have been confirmed to be associated with outbreaks or are close contacts of a confirmed case.
  • 19 cases have been identified as community transmission
  • 59 in Dublin, 20 in Kildare, 14 in Donegal, 14 in Limerick, 8 in Wexford, 6 in Tipperary and the remaining 21 are in Carlow, Clare, Cork, Kerry, Kilkenny, Laois, Louth, Mayo, Meath and Wicklow.
