A Fine Gael councilor resigned from the party whip after breaking COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Olympic silver medalist Kenny Egan, who was elected from the Clondalkin district, confirmed that he resigned from the match.
It follows a visit to Baltimore in West Cork on August 22 after attending a boxing event in Essex in the UK the week before. She traveled to the UK on August 9.
The practicing psychotherapist returned to Dublin Airport on August 15 and tested negative for COVID-19.
But by traveling to West Cork seven days later, he broke coronavirus guidelines that require people to restrict movement for 14 days when returning to Ireland from the UK.
In a statement to Independent.ie, he “sincerely apologized” for his actions.
He said: “I want to sincerely apologize for violating the health guidelines upon my return to the country earlier this month.
“It just shouldn’t have happened. I made a big mistake and I’m sincerely sorry.
“To defeat this pandemic, everyone must obey public health guidelines. Public representatives have an even greater responsibility to do so and I failed in this regard.
“I want to apologize to everyone, but most importantly to the public and the communities for which I was chosen. The fight against Covid-19 continues. I wish you all much success in this ongoing battle.”
The former boxer has been a member of the South Dublin County Council since 2014.
