The number of coronavirus deaths here has risen to 1,506 after the National Public Health Emergency Team announced another 10 deaths tonight.

Data validation at the Health Protection Surveillance Center has resulted in the denotification of one death. The figure of 1,506 deaths reflects this.

There have been 426 new confirmed cases of the virus, bringing the total in Ireland since the outbreak began to 23,827.

Today’s number is a pretty substantial jump in new cases from 159 yesterday.

The Medical Director of the Department of Health, Dr. Tony Holohan, said that many of them “are not cases that have arisen in the last short period of time.”

He said there was a delay in notifications at a hospital in the south of the country, which meant that the figures were accumulated without the National Public Health Emergency being aware of them.

Without those numbers, Dr. Holohan said, we would be where he expected, about 140 cases today.

Dr. Holohan said: “The National Public Health Emergency Team met today and has given more advice to the Government.

We still want to see progress in the coming days.

“We need to continue our measures of physical distance and hygiene if we want to continue suppressing the spread of the disease.”

In the North, the Northern Department of Health announced five other Covid-19 deaths today.

It increases the total number of deaths from coronavirus in the north to 454 and means that 1,960 patients have died from the virus on the island of Ireland.

Professor Philip Nolan, chair of the NPHET Irish Epidemiological Modeling Advisory Group, said: “All indicators of the spread of Covid-19 are declining, including the average number of cases per day, the number of people in the hospital and the ICU, ICU admissions and number of deaths reported per day.

“This is reinforced by our estimated number of reproduction which is currently stable between 0.4 and 0.6.

“We will be monitoring this number and the total number of infections in the population very closely in the coming weeks.”

The HPSC also released data until midnight on Tuesday, May 12, when there were 23,259 cases.

    It reveals it:

  • 57% are women and 42% are men
  • The median age of confirmed cases is 48 years.
  • 3,053 cases (13%) have been hospitalized
  • Of the hospitalized, 387 cases have been admitted to the ICU
  • 7,123 cases are associated with health workers
  • Dublin has the highest number of cases with 11,308 (49% of all cases) followed by Kildare with 1,348 cases (6%) and then Cork with 1,249 cases (5%)
  • Of those for whom the transmission status is known: community transmission represents 60%, close contact represents 37%, foreign travel represents 3%

It occurs when Health Minister Simon Harris revealed today that the reproduction rate of Covid-19 in the Republic is now “remarkably stable.”

Minister Harris said the rate of reproduction, which refers to the average number of people who are likely to be infected for each confirmed case of coronavirus, has now dropped to 0.4 to 0.6.

The government will decide tomorrow whether to move to the first phase of easing coronavirus restrictions starting next week.
