A decision on the recommended or even mandatory use of face masks in some public areas is expected before the weekend, as Dr. Holohan has said they “will play a role.”
The Medical Director of Ireland has said that there will be a role for non-medical grade facial coatings in the community as part of our response to Covid-19.
The government is expected to announce a recommendation, before the weekend, that masks be worn in stores, on public transportation and in other potentially high-traffic environments.
Companies reopening their doors are also expected to be told to ensure that personnel in high-traffic areas wear masks.
However, Ireland may stop introducing the mandatory mask rules already seen in almost 40 countries around the world, including Germany, where people who go out in public must wear face shields.
The UK government has also resisted calls for a mandatory rule to be introduced while struggling with the world’s second highest death rate.
Dr. Tony Holohan said there will be a role for non-medical grade facial liners in the community as part of the pandemic response and that we can expect an announcement soon.
Speaking at the Health Department last night, Dr. Holohan said that “perhaps” the use of coatings may be recommended in situations such as retail stores or on public transportation.
However, he also highlighted the importance of continued hand hygiene and physical distance during the use of facial coatings.
Our Medical Director said there will be a role in community settings for non-medical grade facial liners.
But he doesn’t want “competition” between the public and healthcare workers when it comes to securing medical-grade personal protective equipment that is essential for front-line healthcare personnel.
