Test Drive and NCT Unlikely to Come Back Soon

Test drives and tests from the National Automobile Testing Service (NCT) are unlikely to return anytime soon, the transport minister said.

Test drives have been suspended indefinitely since April to stop the spread of Covid-19.

The validity of driving licenses and NCT certificates has been extended under Covid-19 emergency measures.

Speaking at the Dail on Wednesday, Kerry Independent TD Danny Healy Rae asked when driving tests and NCT would resume as many of his younger constituents cannot get jobs without driver’s licenses.

In response, Transportation Minister Shane Ross said: “On the subject of driving tests and when it will happen … I think it is reasonable to speculate that it will probably be quite late in the day.

“I think the reality is that driving tests are very difficult to introduce under social distancing because the space between the tester and the driver is very close.

“Anything that falls into that category would be very difficult, and that includes NCT testing.

“The National Public Health Emergency Team will guide us through both tests, but let’s not have too much hope that the driving tests will come back early.”
