A FILA has emerged over claims that “school profile” will be part of the evaluation of student performance following the cancellation of the Leaving Cert.
Education Minister Joe McHugh has stated that school profiling will not be part of the process and the branding arguments that disadvantaged students will lose as a “disgrace.”
He was responding to Dáil’s comments from Labor TD Aodhán Ó Ríordáin, who insisted that the school profile is part of the planned system for evaluating students.
Ó Ríordáin said: “Minister with the highest respect, I cannot accept your answer regarding the school profile”.
He said Labor agrees with the use of calculated grades, adding: “We will not accept the school profile … because it is fundamentally unfair.”
Mr. Ó Ríordáin added: “I do not agree with you when you say that an average student from a paying school would not be favored by the system.
“If I were an average fee-paying school system, today I would be much happier than I would be if I were an exceptional student at a disadvantaged school because you will be evaluated on the history of your school,” he said.
He added: “Inevitably someone from a fee payment environment is going to benefit from that.
“So, Minister, please, please, get rid of the school profile and we can all stay together.”
McHugh accused Ó Ríordáin of “doing bad service to disadvantaged schools” in his comments.
“We have exceptional students in disadvantaged schools and today you are sending the message that they are going to be disadvantaged because they are in a disadvantaged school … I think it is a shame.”
Mr. Ó Ríordáin rejected this and Mr. McHugh continued: “I think it is an absolute shame” while saying that he did not want to get in line.
Mr. Ó Ríordáin said: “There is no point in telling me that you are not going to be in a row with me and then point your finger at me and call me a disgrace.”
“I call your process a disgrace, not you.”
McHugh said: “There are Leaving Cert students listening to that.
“I think it is wrong that you are selling that because exceptional students, whether they are in a community school, a Deis school or a private school, will not be discriminated against because it is a school-wide grade. It is a calculated grade. performance-based school … “
