The plan to provide temporary child care to health workers in their homes has been canceled due to low acceptance.
It was launched last Thursday with a call to child care services to volunteer to provide child care at home for front-line employees.
Minister of Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone said the plan had been scrapped as only six child care providers had signed up to be part of the service.
A variety of reasons have been presented for the low enrollment rate. These include
- availability of insurance coverage
- concerns about possible virus transmission
- Difficulty meeting employer responsibilities for breaks and rest periods
- and concerns about the lack of protection for staff working alone.
The Minister recognized the efforts both within her own department and externally to implement the plan. She had opened that it would be possible to carry out such a plan successfully and somewhat ease the burden on front-line health workers.
“Unfortunately, this has not been the case,” he said in a statement.
Minister Zappone said her department remains strongly focused on developing solutions to what she described as “the major challenges” of a gradual reopening of early learning and child care facilities by June 29, in line with the Roadmap. government to reopen society and business.
