Dublin city center is slated for some major changes as Ireland begins to reopen after the coronavirus crisis.
Some of the plans that have been discussed include pedestrianizing College Green, restricting car use, and a new Liffey cycle route.
Dublin City Council Chief Executive Owen Keegan revealed that there were already “significant queues” outside stores.
He told Newstalk Breakfast: “There has been a great demand from the citizens of Dublin for measures to facilitate greater social distancing, such as pedestrians.

“And given the dramatic reduction in travel that has occurred in all modes, we thought it was entirely appropriate to respond to that demand. We’ve seen a significant queue on the trail outside of the retail establishments that are open, and we’ve been responding to that “.
Keegan also suggested that certain areas could only see pedestrianization in certain parts of the day.

And the DCC chief also seemed to rule out “drinking on the streets” outside of pubs.
He added: “There are some places where the only solution may be after 11 o’clock to make it pedestrian, but we have not presented those proposals.
“The measures we have implemented have been very well received and we have no problem justifying them. We took advantage of the absence of traffic to proceed with the interim Liffey Cycle Route, and I couldn’t see any reason why anyone would oppose it. “
On whether the impact of Covid-19 could change Dublin’s focus on cars in the future, he added: “I think it could.
“What caught my attention is the number of people, especially in urban villages, who have been in contact with the City Council saying how much they enjoy that their villages are not dominated by traffic.”
“And we have had businesses looking to reopen, where with social distancing capacity will be greatly reduced, we have had restaurants in particular asking if they could take out parking spaces, if they could accommodate more of that activity in public.”
