Coronavirus Ireland News: Patient under 25 fighting for life after hiring Covid-19

A person under the age of 25 is one of the last Irish patients admitted to an ICU after contracting Covid-19.

The patient, in the age group of 15-24 years, was fighting for his life on Sunday after being diagnosed with the coronavirus.

They have become the sixth person in this age group to receive critical care in the Republic of Ireland since the outbreak began.

This is in accordance with the 386 ICU cases that have been registered by the Health Protection Surveillance Center as of midnight on Sunday.

Health Minister Simon Harris confirmed that 69 of them were still in intensive care on Tuesday.

An HPSC report did not indicate whether or not this new case of a young ICU had an underlying condition.

The exact age, location, or sex of the patient are also unknown.

The youngest people admitted to the ICU with the virus involve two children between the ages of 5 and 14.

While the youngest deaths in the country related to the virus were 17 and 23 years old.

Meanwhile, it was announced Tuesday that 24 other people died from the coronavirus, bringing the death toll to 1,488.

And there have been 107 more confirmed cases, bringing the total number of infections to 23,242.

The Health Department announced the figures at a briefing chaired by Medical Director Dr. Tony Holohan on Tuesday night.

He said: “We continue to review the progress of the disease and, although we are still progressing, which gives us real encouragement, we must move on.

“We still have 70 people in the ICU and more than 500 people in the hospital. We have more work to do.”
