Matt Damon’s daughter caught Covid-19 in New York while he was on lockdown in Ireland

Matt Damon has revealed his eldest daughter contracted Covid-19 while he and the rest of the family were thousands of miles away in Ireland.

The Jason Bourne, Contagion and The Departed actor has been in lockdown in Dalkey since March.

The 49-year-old spoke highly about “beautiful” Dalkey and called Leo Varadkar a “badass” as I’ve lifted the lid on life here in a radio interview.

Speaking about his daughter’s scary ordeal on Spin 1038, I added: “Our oldest daughter is in college, obviously that’s been shut down. She’s in New York City and she had Covid really early on along with her roommates and got through it fine.

“We’re going to go back to Los Angeles and she’s going to come out so we’ll all be together and figure out what the heck we’re going to do. It’s such an odd limbo that we’re all in.”

And the actor was full of praise for Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, calling him a “badass”.

“You’ve got a president (Taoiseach) who just goes to the hospital and starts working, I mean what a badass, it’s just on another level.”

Leo Varadakr has said it is

Matt said he had arrived in Dublin just before the restrictions hit in March but paid Dalkey the highest compliment by saying he couldn’t think of a better place to be in lockdown.

He continued: “I arrived before lockdown. I’m in the middle of a movie, we shot the first half in France and rest in Ireland but the movie was shut down in early March.

“Dalkey is incredible, it’s one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been. We feel guilty that we have this incredible set up in this place. It’s absolutely gorgeous.

“They were saying you could only travel 2km but 2km from here is trees and forest and ocean, I couldn’t think where else you’d rather be.”

Matt felt very proud to become one of Dalkey’s own and had heard rumors about their solid support against a New York Times journalist trying to sniff out some information in a local Facebook group about his time there.

“I heard this story. I had no idea all this was happening behind the scenes. It’s incredible,” I have told Fully Charged hosts Graham and Nathan.

The actor described Killiney Hill as “insane and like a fairytale” and mentioned a few places in the suburb that I have visited.

“The first few days we were here we went into a book store but unfortunately everywhere is shut down so it’s limited (where we can go).

“There is a lovely coffee place still open. The barista said ‘normally this place is really buzzing but I’ve actually got to know my customers lately because we have time to chat’ which I thought was great.”

The American actor also revealed what was in that red SuperValu bag he was seen carrying in a photo.

He said: “That bag, we just had towels in it. I was with the kids and we were taking a dip in the water.

“We just grabbed our SuperValu bags and packed it with beach towels and stuff.

He skirted around the question of purchasing a holiday home in Dalkey but said he is definitely coming back.

“I’m coming back anyway whenever the world rights itself. I have eight weeks of shooting to look forward to. We really want to get on with it but (Dalkey) wouldn’t be a bad place to end up in … we’ll get a beer when I come back. “

Spin 103.8 radio hosts Graham and Nathan had been Good Will Hunting the famous actor from day one and it turns out Damon had also wanted to get in touch with the radio duo, Dublin Live reports.

He said: “It’s kinda my fault [for it being so long]. I heard you on the radio like a month ago. I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have put you through all that [effort].

“I heard you talking about tracking me down one day in March, I was trying to memorize the number to call in but then I got talking to my wife and forgot.

“One day she said ‘have you called yet? You’re such an idiot, just look up their number you don’t need to wait for them to say it on air’.

“I had also FaceTimed with Bono. He said to me ‘you know there’s a radio station that’s looking for you’ and I thought I really got to track those guys down.”
