“I tell anyone who asks an unpleasant question like that.”
United States President Donald Trump abruptly left a press conference on Monday after a confrontation with journalists where he said to an Asian-American journalist, “Don’t ask me. Ask China.”
In the White House rose garden, Trump gave his first press conference since April 27, flanked by new test teams, saying the United States is the world leader in testing.
After his speech, Trump answered some questions from journalists.
CBS’s Weijia Jiang, an Asian-American reporter, asked Trump why his administration was promoting his coronavirus test numbers and comparing them to totals from other countries.
“Why does it matter?” she asked. “Why is it a global competition for you if Americans continue to lose their lives every day and continue to see more cases every day?”
Trump responded by saying, “Well, they are losing their lives everywhere in the world. And maybe that’s a question they should ask China.”
“Don’t ask me. Ask China that question. OK? When you ask them that question, you can get a very unusual answer.”
He then tried to go ahead and answer a question from another journalist, but Jiang questioned the answer.

“Sir, why are you saying that to me, specifically that I should ask China?” she said.
Jiang has worked for CBS News since 2015; She was born in China and emigrated to America at the age of two.
“I’m not specifically telling anyone,” Trump said. “I tell anyone who asks an unpleasant question like that.”
“That is not an unpleasant question,” said Jiang. “Why does that matter?”
Trump asked another question again, but skipped CNN’s Kaitlan Collins when he tried to ask a question before thanking the press and leaving the podium.
