A new Dáil committee, established to examine the Covid-19 crisis, will hold its first meeting today and appoint a chair.
Due to physical distancing measurements, the opening hearing will take place in Dáil’s chamber.
The special committee is made up of 19 TDs, four each from Sinn Féin, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael, with one seat each for other independent parties and groups.
He is tasked with questioning Taoiseach, ministers, and officials about the Covid-19 pandemic and the state’s response.
However, your first task will be to elect a president.
Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane threw his hat into the ring yesterday afternoon. Other deputies interested in the role include John McGuinness of Fianna Fáil, co-leader of the Social Democrats Róisín Shortall and independent TD Michael McNamara.
Many committee members have said they do not want to duplicate the work of Oireachtas’ existing committees, so the special committee is expected to have a short lifespan.
However, since no other Oireachtas committee is currently sitting, this will be a high profile committee for the duration.
