A teenager was accused of rape of a woman in Dublin almost two years ago.
The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, appeared before Judge Brendan Toale at the Dublin Children’s Court.
He was charged with rape of a woman in a housing estate in West Dublin on a date in August 2018. He was 15 years old at the time of the indictment.
The Director of the Prosecutor’s Office has conducted an impeachment trial in the Central Criminal Court.
The Juvenile Court has the discretion to consider dealing with the most serious crimes that are otherwise referred to a higher court.
You can only do this taking into account age and maturity level, as well as other relevant factors, into consideration.
However, you cannot consider accepting jurisdiction if a youth is accused of rape.
The boy, who has not indicated how he will testify, was released on bail to appear again in juvenile court next month for the prosecution to hand him a book of evidence. Once served, he can be sent to trial before the Central Criminal Court.
He was accompanied to court by a lawyer and a family member. The bond was subject to him obeying various terms of bail.
You were warned to hand over your passport and not request new travel documentation, reside at a specific address, and have no contact or threaten the complainant.
