‘IT IS NOT NORMAL TO WALK THROUGH THE ARMED CITY’

When the man saw Gardai approach, he ran near Liffey Street and placed an object in a trash can.

The weapon and ammunition were recovered after the container after a search by the officers.

The arrested man is not considered a major criminal and the police are now investigating what he was doing with a gun.

A source said: “It is the early days of the investigation, so it is still unclear why he had it.

“But it is not normal for people to walk around the armed city at night.”

“Typically, when a suspect is caught with a gun, he either has it for his own protection or is on his way to use it.

“That doesn’t seem to be the case here, but time will tell.”

Gardai said: “A man in his 30s and a woman in his 20s were arrested at the scene and are currently being held on Store Street.

“The firearm and ammunition have been brought to the Ballistics Section for analysis.”
