Tributes have been paid to a 12-year-old girl from Cork who sadly died after a long battle with cerebral palsy.

Abbey McGeough of Blarney passed away Saturday in the loving care of those at Cork University Hospital.

The brave girl had been seriously ill in hospital for the past week and local emergency services sent her thoughts and prayers to her and her family via social media in a #lightupforabi initiative.

Online prayers and services were held for a fifth grader in Rathpeacon while her local community wished her a full recovery.

Unfortunately, on Sunday morning, ambulance paramedic Ger O’Dea announced on behalf of the family that Abi had passed away.

Mr. O’Dea said on Twitter: “I write this post with a heavy heart on behalf of Abi’s mother, Leslianne, her grandparents Phil and Abina, aunts, uncles and family to give them the heartbreaking news that their wonderful princess He has received His wings today and joined the angels in heaven.

“She lit up so many rooms with her smile and touched so many people on her journey that she now rest in peace and shine her light on all those who will miss her very much.”

“A sincere thanks to everyone who turned it on for Abi and provided support and comfort to her family while she was in the hospital.”

Abi, as she was commonly known, was first diagnosed with cerebral palsy in 2009 and has since fought valiantly.

Her family ran a series of fundraising events in recent years to finance the medical procedures she needed.

The Cork girl’s funeral will take place at a later date, but it will be a family one only due to current government restrictions.
