The number of daily deaths in Spain from coronavirus fell to 143 today, the lowest daily number since mid-March.
The total deaths increased to 26,621 from 26,478 and the number of diagnosed cases increased to 224,390, the health ministry said.
About 51% of the Spanish population will advance to Phase 1 of a four-step relaxation plan tomorrow in certain regions that met the necessary criteria.
These include the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands, where bars, restaurants and shops will open at reduced capacity, and museums, gyms and hotels will open their doors for the first time in almost two months.
Other regions that pass to Phase 1 include Galicia, the Basque Country, La Rioja, Aragon, Cantabria, Murcia, parts of Valencia.
In Andalusia, the provinces of Almería, Jaén, Córdoba, Seville, Cádiz and Huelva are in Phase 1, while Malaga and Granada will remain in Phase 0.
The two largest cities in the country, Madrid and Barcelona, currently do not meet the relaxation criteria and will remain in Phase 0.
The chief of emergency health, Fernando Simon, urged the Spaniards not to think of it “as a race” and said that Madrid might be ready to move on to the next stage within a week.
“The virus is not gone,” said Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.
