Cork GAA mourns the death of superfan ‘Jonty’ O’Leary

‘Jonty’ O’Leary, one of Cork GAA’s most loyal and colorful supporters, has passed away.

O’Leary’s red and white outfits and fedora hats made him one of the country’s most recognized fans and he delighted in cheering on Cork sides in all codes and grades for the past 60 years.

Joe Seward, Life FM sports presenter, paid tribute to his friend: “Jonty played drums in the Rebel Band and could be seen anywhere from Donegal to Dungarvan or Croke Park to Cusack Park cheering on his beloved rebels in the company of his great Band friends and colleagues: Thomas ‘Bomber’ Roche, Pa ‘The Piper’ O’Leary; Cyril ‘The Bird’ Kavanagh; Ray Lucey, Shane Murphy and Eddie The ‘Eagle’ Burns.

“Jonty attended his first All-Ireland in 1956 and had a constant presence at the Kent station to greet the Cork teams, whether they won or lost the championship decision makers at Croke Park.

“Cork was not his only love and witnessed how his beloved Barrs won the Cork County Senior Football Championship in 2018 after a 33 year wait, it was also a particularly special moment that he appreciated and celebrated as only he could” .

“Whatever the outcome, Jonty made sure that the mood remained optimistic and he was the perennial optimist.”
