Response to the Covid-19 outbreak in the direct provision ‘an abuse of human rights’

Bríd Smith of People Before Profit says the state’s actions in dealing with the covid-19 outbreaks in the direct provision system are “an abuse of human rights.”

More than 160 direct supply residents across the country are known to have tested positive, while about 75 people living in a facility in Co Kerry are being treated as close contacts.

The Asylum Seekers Movement says residents are being blamed for not isolating themselves socially, but are finding it impossible to do so.

People Before Profit TD Bríd Smith says the message given to asylum seekers is “insulting”.

“The letter says that residents have been putting themselves in danger because they have not isolated themselves,” he said.

“We have some pre-profit people in that particular city who, along with other local people, have been delivering food and baby supplies to them.

“They should know the residents a little bit and they say it’s awful because most of these residents have to live three or four per room.”
