A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy has become the first to die in the United States after suffering “a coronavirus-related Kawasaki-like inflammatory disease.”

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo confirmed the news during his press conference on Friday.

Cuomo also tweeted: “There have been 73 reported cases in New York of children becoming seriously ill with symptoms similar to Kawasaki disease and toxic shock syndrome.”

“On Thursday, a 5-year-old boy died of these complications, believed to be caused by COVID-19.”

The governor also confirmed that the Health Department is investigating the situation.

There are at least 85 cases of the mysterious disease in the country, NBC reported, with at least 64 of them in New York State alone.

Cuomo also advised parents to seek urgent care if their children experience prolonged fever, difficulty feeding, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting, respiratory problems, a change in skin color, acceleration of the heart, chest pain, urination less, lethargy, irritability or confusion.

Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted Tuesday: “If your child has a fever, a rash, abdominal pain or persistent vomiting, call his doctor immediately.”

He also said that NYC Healthy has instructed all health care providers to inform patients under the age of 21 with symptoms.

What are the symptoms?

Mayor de Blasio said parents should call the doctor if their child experiences:

  • Persistent fever
  • Eruption
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting

The mysterious condition has been compared to toxic shock syndrome (TSS) and Kawasaki disease.

The signs of TSS are:

  • High temperature
  • Flu-like symptoms such as headache, cold sensation, pain, sore throat, and cough.
  • Feel and be sick
  • Diarrhea
  • Generalized burn-like rash.
  • The lips, tongue, and whites of the eyes turn bright red.
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Labored breathing
  • Confusion

Signs of Kawasaki disease include:

  • An eruption
  • Swollen glands in the neck.
  • Dry and chapped lips
  • Red fingers or fingers
  • Red eyes
