Ten Covid-19 outbreaks have occurred in meat-processing plants and 566 people have been infected, according to the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET).
HSE outbreak control teams have been dispatched to each plant to try to control outbreaks, according to medical director Dr. Tony Holohan.
NPHET announced the death of 27 other patients at its briefing on Friday. There have now been 1,429 Covid-19 related deaths in the Republic.
NPHET reported some 156 new cases of the disease. The new cases bring the total number to 22,541.
Compliance with restrictions put in place to slow the spread of the virus remains very high, according to Dr. Holohan, who presented a variety of data on car traffic, heavy vehicle movements, public transport numbers, use of ATMs, and personal activity as measured by Google.
“Together, these data say that the population is doing very well and that this compliance is maintained,” he said.
Over-85s account for 10.2 percent of all cases and 45.6 percent of deaths, according to a breakdown of the oldest age groups provided for the first time.
Of a total of 22,915 cases, there were 771 between 65-69 years, 910 between 70-74 years, 974 between 75-79 years, 1,241 between 80-84 years and 2,329 among over 85 -years of age.
Of 1,429 deaths, 69 occurred between 65-69 years, 128 between 70-74 years, 180 between 75-79 years, 304 between 80-84 years and 652 between more than 85 years. .
Direct provision
It is considering evaluating all residents of direct supply centers, where 149 cases have been reported in 12 groups, he said.
Any asylum seeker in direct disposition who has Covid-19 and cannot self-insulate has the right to use the isolation facility at Citywest, officials clarified.
When asked if the Department of Education had made the right decision to cancel this year’s Leaving Cert, Dr. Holohan said he had followed public health advice.

He said he expected schools to resume their activities in the fall “if things are going well for us,” but “it is impossible to make certain predictions about where we will be in early September.”
NPHET was still considering whether the reopening of schools would be total or partial at first, he said.
An analysis of the 1,429 deaths so far shows that 521 (40 percent) occurred in the hospital, including 69 (4.8 percent) in intensive care.
Some 1,232 patients (86 percent) had underlying conditions. There were 719 deaths of men and 710 of women. The median age of deaths was 84 and the mean was 82.
Changes in the case definition for evidence of the disease, as well as the requirement that individuals seeking evidence belong to a priority group, have resulted in duplication of referrals through GPs, said Dr Holohan, but this was “well within predictions”.
A total of 378 people with Covid-19 have been admitted to intensive care, of whom 74 remain there. Two new patients were admitted in the last 24 hours.
There are now 412 disease groups in residential care settings, including 238 in nursing homes. Six more groups were reported in residential care facilities in the previous 24 hours, and three more in nursing homes.
There are 5,594 cases in residential care centers, 109 more in one day. This includes 4,393 in nursing homes, 84 more.
Some 899 deaths are associated with residential care facilities, 63% of all deaths; This figure includes 777 nursing home-associated deaths, or 54% of all deaths.
The number of cases associated with health workers has further increased to 6,586.
Nursing homes
Speaking on Friday at the opening of a Covid-19 assessment center for vulnerable groups at Mater Hospital in North Dublin, Health Minister Simon Harris said progress is being made in nursing homes to fight the Covid-19 spread, but still an “area of concern”.
Mr. Harris said it is “a tragic fact” that many people have died from the virus in Ireland and “many of them have been in nursing home facilities.”
Mr. Harris said he was encouraged by the large-scale testing program for staff and residents in long-term care facilities and that he continues to collaborate with Nursing Homes Ireland and Hiqa.
Marginalized groups and other “challenging” sectors will become a new front line in the battle against Covid-19.
According to official figures, about 58 percent of Roma who have been tested and 43 percent of travelers have tested positive. .
The new center includes a mobile unit to test and treat marginalized groups throughout the city center, and will be able to deliver the test results in less than an hour.
Harris said the HSE now has the capacity to perform 12,000 tests a day, and that this number will increase to 15,000 in mid-May.
He said there were encouraging signs in terms of hospital and ICU admissions, but warned that “this virus has not disappeared.”
“It continues to wreak havoc on the lives of many people, it continues to cost lives in this country and it continues to make people sick. It wouldn’t take us long to slide back, ”he said.
The Minister said that anyone currently flying to the State must complete a passenger location form and requested to isolate themselves for two weeks and reveal where they are self-isolating.
“Right now that is being done administratively and now we are looking to put that on a regulatory basis to make it mandatory,” he said.
