Divorces have been granted online for the first time in Ireland’s history.
The Irish Independent reports that three decrees where the individuals involved appeared via a video link were allowed yesterday.
The Courts Service has adopted remote hearings since Easter due to social distancing rules.
The measures could be in force until the end of next year, according to the President of the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, One Family, an advocacy group for single parents, has welcomed the announcement that the District Court will hear more child access and support cases during the COVID crisis.
Speaking about the move, Karen Kiernan, CEO of One Family, said the group had received an increase in the number of calls in recent weeks from parents concerned about access visits and child support payments.
She said: “We are pleased to note that the Courts Service and the President of the District Court listen to our concerns on these issues and are committed to hearing access and maintenance issues as urgent.”
