To update:

The Late Late program raised € 2 million for Pieta House last night during its broadcast appeal.

The Pieta House helpline was shown during the show and the RTÉ plaza was lit with lights representing a person who had died by suicide in Ireland in 2019.

Speaking about the appeal, Late Late Show host Ryan Tubridy said: “Every penny donated tonight will fund therapy hours at Pieta and ensure their 24/7 crisis helpline remains open.”

During the show, Paul McEvoy, a client of Pieta House, spoke about his brother’s loss to suicide and his own battles with mental health.

His sister referred him to the support group simply by leaving him a phone number.

Thousands of people have participated in this morning’s Dawn Appeal for the suicide prevention charity Pieta.

The annual Darkness Into Light event, which was expected to be attended by more than 250,000 people, was unable to continue this year.

The Covid-19 pandemic has led to a general budget deficit of more than 6.5 million euros for the charity.

Pieta’s Tom McEvoy is encouraging anyone who gets up at dawn for the Dawn Call to share their photos.

He says, “Go to Darknessintolight.ie. It’s a lovely website where we’ve also set up a lovely app where you can upload your photos, your special selfie photos of where you are, right now and share them with others.

“It’s all a site of hope, hopefully we’ll see it on our Darknessintolight.ie website and maybe if you could make a donation.”
