THE Leaving Certificate has been removed for the first time in state history amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Students will now have the option of receiving a grade based on their performance in school or taking the traditional test when it is safe to do so.
The Leaving Cert, which generally begins in early June, was rescheduled until July 29, but Minister McHugh said it would now be “impossible” to have it at that time.
Education Minister Joe McHugh said: “I have done my best to run the 2020 Certificate of Abandonment as closely as possible to the way the tests were originally intended.
“My wish had been to allow students to take the written and practical exams in July and August, but I have compelling evidence, based on medical advice and other assessments, that the Certificate of Exit exams cannot be performed reliably and validly, not in a way that would be equitable for students. “
