In temporary legislation signed by Health Minister Simon Harris on April 7, hardware stores were included in a list of permitted outlets.
They were also exempt from the closure measures established on March 24.
A list of essential retailers read: “Hardware stores, builders’ stores, and stores offering hardware products necessary for home and business maintenance, sanitation and farm equipment, essential supplies and tools for gardening / farming / farming.”
However, when asked on April 9 if garden centers and hardware stores are considered essential, Dr. Holohan said, “In my opinion, they are not.”
FOLLOWED GUIDELINES
Today, a DBEI spokesperson confirmed to the Irish Times that some stores were told they would reopen this week.
The spokesperson emphasized that any retail outlet that is opened during the crisis must guarantee physical distance and public health guidelines are “rigorously implemented.”
Proper distancing between customers and store clerks should be in line with government guidelines, only small groups should be allowed to enter stores, and queues should be administered in and out of the store.
Online services are encouraged where possible to minimize footfall.
A DBEI spokesperson told the Irish Sun: “The regulations relate to the right to move and travel.
Essential service workers can take trips to collect supplies needed for the emergency services they provide.
“Hardware stores and other stores should not be open to the general public.
“Such outlets should not be opened except in cases of emergency and / or delivery as set forth in the updated list of retail services. That list has not changed.”
Meanwhile, the lifting of Covid-19’s Irish restrictions will happen “slowly and in a controlled manner,” said the chairman of the Covid-19 expert advisory group.
Cillian De Gascun said some companies may open at reduced capacity, but the company will not immediately return to what it was, as the restrictions will be gradually removed.
Speaking to RTE Radio One, Dr. De Gascun said some nonessential workers may return to their workplace, but did not say which industries it could include.
