A WOMAN who has a family member at the Dublin nursing home, where 11 residents died in two weeks, only found out about the group by reading the newspaper.

The HSE revealed today that a nursing home in the capital has seen 11 people die since April 2.

    The HSE-run facility said ten people who died had tested positive for the killer virus, while another resident who died was a suspected case.

Ten of those who died at St Mary’s Hospital tested positive for coronavirus, while 11 are still awaiting confirmation.

Dr. Gerri O Neil, who still has a family member at home, only found out about the deaths at the Phoenix Park Care Home by reading the newspaper.

‘SURPRISED TAKEN’

She said: “You can imagine how shocked I was this morning when I read in the Irish Times that not only had there been 11 deaths to date at St Mary’s but the first one had occurred on April 2.

“I got the first call saying there was an outbreak on April 10.

“What happened in the eight days in between?”

The Phoenix Park Nursing Home has 198 residential sites in total and is Ireland’s largest care center for the elderly.

‘DEEPEST SYMPTOMS’

In a statement, the HSE said: “Unfortunately we can confirm that since April 2, 2020 there have been 11 Covid-19 related resident deaths at St Mary’s Hospital, 10 of which are confirmed positive with Covid-19 and one that is a suspicious case, awaiting results.

“We offer our deepest condolences to their family and friends, and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

“All efforts continue to be made to maintain the professional standard of auxiliary nursing and healthcare staffing at St Mary’s Hospital during this time.”

“We continue to contact family members and relatives of all residents of St Mary’s Hospital regarding any suspected or confirmed Covid-19 cases.

“When a relative has any questions regarding the care of a resident, we ask that they contact us directly.”

44 more deaths

44 more people, 19 women and 25 men, died from Covid-19 in Ireland, it was announced tonight.

The Health Department has also announced 709 new cases of the disease.

33 people died in the east, three in the northwest, three in the south and five in the west of the country.

The median age of deaths reported today is 84.

There have now been 530 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland.

597 new confirmed cases were reported by Irish laboratories and 112 by Germany.

With the latest figures from Germany included, there are now a total of 13,980 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.

The HSE is working to identify any contacts patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread.
