Gardaí has seized cocaine with an estimated street value of € 500,000 and firearms from the occupants of a vehicle that did not stop at a checkpoint in North Dublin on Tuesday morning.
The tour, which is one of the biggest drug discoveries so far this year, was made after the vehicle crashed into a wall at Essex Quay around 4:30 a.m.
Two men and a woman, all over the age of 20, were arrested at the scene on the southern docks of Liffey, near Temple Bar.
A short time before, Gardaí, who was running a Covid-19 checkpoint on Phibsboro Road, had tried to stop the car, but had driven off at high speed.
Gardaí, from the Dublin Region Highway Surveillance Division, immediately carried out a managed containment operation in search of the vehicle.
Gardaí, who was chasing him, quickly entered the scene of the collision at Essex Quay and noticed one of the occupants throwing an object into the Liffey River.
Later, members of the Garda Water Unit discovered two pistols on Tuesday after a search of the riverbed.
During a search for the vehicle, Gardaí also recovered 8 kg of suspected cocaine and a small amount of cannabis herb that were sent to a laboratory for analysis.
The three occupants of the vehicle who were arrested at the scene are being held at garda stations on Kevin Street, Kilmainham and Pearse Street under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act.
