The HSE admitted that up to “100 people” have been incorrectly informed that their coronavirus test was negative, when in fact they had contracted the virus.
The medical director, Dr. Holohan, promised to personally investigate the error.

He said: “It relates to a small number of people, it relates to the tests that were processed in the laboratory in Germany and how they were designated.
“These are tests that would have been older, which in the ordinary course would have led to a second test, but in this interval it would not make sense for the people involved.”
“Over the course of tonight, I want to understand the issue in more detail and we will consider it as part of our meeting with the National Public Health Emergency team and tomorrow I will be able to give you full clarity when” I have a full understanding of the facts. “
People received a test result saying they tested negative for Covid-19, but in fact tested positive for the virus.
The HSE released a statement saying: “The HSE identified that on Saturday, April 11, fewer than 100 people had been informed, by mistake, that their test did not detect Covid-19.
‘WEAKLY POSITIVE’
“In the review, these patients were, in fact, positive for Covid-19.”
The National Virus Reference Laboratory reviewed the test data for the original test result and re-analyzed the original samples.
Some samples were analyzed as “weakly positive,” meaning that indeterminate cases were initially reported as undetected and people received incorrect results.
They explained that the error occurred with a small number of laboratory tests.
“Such results would indicate that another test is required.”
They went on to say that it was not possible to request another sample within the required time frame such as: “We are dealing with a pandemic.”
The decision was made to review the initial test results and re-analyze the sample.
REMEDIAL ACTION
The Contact Tracking Team collected the information and corrective action was taken immediately.
The HSE said: “A team of public health doctors has contacted or attempted to contact each person involved to advise them on the correct test result and to provide them with appropriate public health advice and support.
“The HSE apologizes for this error, and every effort has been made to ensure that the correct information is communicated to these patients without delay.”
Holohan stated that “it is not of great importance to public health” like people “, he would have been advised, if he has not been tested and if he has these symptoms or if he has been tested and has not been tested, suppose which is Covid-19 and isolate for 14 days and at the end of 14 days and be symptom-free or temperature-free for the last five days, you no longer need to isolate.
“The HSE is making contact with public health teams and those people to explain it in those terms.”
