President Michael D Higgins will headline a commemoration of the 1916 Easter Uprising at a televised event this afternoon.

The President will lay a wreath at Áras an Uachtadorain followed by a minute of silence for those who died in the uprising.

The 104th anniversary of the Easter Rising is celebrated not through ceremonies attended by the public, but through a televised event.

President Higgins will begin the commemoration by ringing the Peace Bell at Áras an Uacharáin.

Separately, an army officer will conduct a proclamation reading within the GPO on Dublin’s O’Connell Street.

President Higgins will place a wreath on a group of 16 birch trees in Áras an Uacharáin, planted to commemorate those executed after the Uprising.

The minute of silence will also be maintained for those who died due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In his Easter message on Friday, President Higgins said that the severity and magnitude of the Covid-19 pandemic is in our hands.

He said that by cooperating and working with the suggested measures to combat the virus, we will have saved lives that would otherwise have been lost.

President Higgins also paid tribute to people in the health services and other places that were working to keep people healthy and safe.

Live coverage of the event will air on RTÉ One and RTÉ News Now starting at 11:55 am.
