Stadia controller can now capture screenshots on Android

Recent updates to Google’s game streaming service platform have focused on matching the web experience to Chromecast. A server-side update today allows the Stadia Controller to “capture” screenshots and video clips on Android.

Original 4/29: Until today, touching the dedicated capture button when the Stadia controller is connected to Android generated an error message. One press now displays the “Save Screenshot” toast, with a 1-second hold that preserves the last 30 seconds of play.

The mobile capture experience now matches stadia.com and televisions. What is missing on mobile (and on the web) is now the functionality of the Google Assistant, with a click that still throws an error.

Stadia screenshots could always be seen on Android and iOS, though zooming is not yet possible, while the website won that gallery in early March. That is currently the only platform where you can download images and videos. In terms of storage, an infinite number of screenshots can be captured. Professional users get 500 clips, while free clients are restricted to 100.

The ability to take screenshots of Stadia on Android will be implemented tonight. While there is a notice for users to install a Driver update in the last 24 hours, the extended capture capacity is likely to be a change on the server side.

Update 30/4: Google quietly confirmed this morning the launch of Mobile Captures as part of the April Stadia Savepoint summary.
