Starting tonight for four nights live online, the Abbey Theater will premiere a series of unique performances by Irish writers and monologue actors written during the closing.
Performances can be seen on RTÉ Culture tonight starting at 7.30pm.
Speaking on RTÉ in Morning Ireland, Co-Director of the Abbey Theater Neil Murray said that the ‘Dear Ireland’ project brought together new and experienced writers and asked them “If you could write a postcard to Ireland, what would you say?”
A wide variety of stories, some fun, angry, and moving, have emerged in 50 monologues written and performed in isolation that will air for four nights, Tuesday through Friday.
All of the artists involved were paid for their work, which Murray said formed a sort of “time capsule” of the national theater during these unusual times.
He said that a common theme that arises in monologues is hope “and how much we need each other, we depend on each other and we miss each other.”
Each of the presentations is followed by a three-minute “interval” where there is a chat session with the audience.
“You can take your drink to the theater,” joked Murray.
He said the artistic endeavor would allow theater lovers “to sit together in the same place and at the same time” to watch the event, which includes performances by Brendan Gleeson and BlindBoy.
